The PICNET project is part of the Missions Science and Innovation 2024 program and is funded by the Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico Industrial (CDTI) through European funds allocated to the national Recovery and Resilience Mechanism.
Aligned with Mission 3: “Development and Strengthening of the Spanish Integrated Photonics Ecosystem”, the primary objective of the PICNET research project is to investigate high-value-added solutions that enhance security, improve transmission efficiency, and optimize energy consumption in optical communication networks and data centers. This will be achieved by integrating high-capacity, cost-effective components based on integrated photonic circuits.
The project focuses on the integration of advanced, low-cost photonic circuits to optimize data transmission and switching while reducing energy consumption. Additionally, it will explore post-quantum security solutions through Quantum-Safe platforms featuring quantum random number generators (QRNGs) and physically unclonable functions (PUFs).
Furthermore, the research will involve the design, manufacturing, and validation of a 64×64 integrated photonic switch to enhance scalability in data centers and continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) systems to optimize security in data transmission. Finally, the project will assess use cases and architectures to facilitate the industrialization and adoption of these technologies in next-generation optical networks.
